Thai Poosam celebration  all over Dharani

Thai Poosam celebration  all over Dharani

12 Tamil Months Each month has its own spiritual significance.  There are festivals.  There are celebrations.  Some of those months are very good months.  One such month is the month of Thai, and in this month of Thai too, Pusa Nakshatra is a very special star.  We will see the beauty of the month of Thai and the beauty of the Poosa star in the month of Thai in the section.

Star and months

Some important festivals and festivals are celebrated based on Nakshatras and months.  For example Krittikai Nakshatra is special in Aadi month.  Krittikai Nakshatra is also prominent in Thai month and Avita Nakshatra is prominent in Avani month.  Similarly, there are some festivals that connect Tithi and Month.  Chitra Poornami in the month of Chitra.  Poosam in Thai.

When Thai is born, way will be born

If you think about what is so special about Thaipusam, the month of Thai is the first month of the Uthrayana period.  A year to us is a day to the gods.  The 24 hours of a day are divided into 12 months.  So each month represents two hours.  The month of Thai is spiritually called the time of dawn as it represents the 2 hours between 6 am and 8 am.  The sun rises at six o’clock in the morning.  If the sunrise is born, it means that it has dawned.  It means that the way has been found.  It is based on this that the expression that if thai is born, way will be born.

The birth month of the blessed is the month of Thai

Thai Month A special month.  Among the Azhwars, Thirumazhisai incarnated in the month of Azhwar.  Among the priests, Kuratthalwar, Gurugaik Kavalappan, Chotai Nambi and Thirukovilur Emperumanar Jeeyar, all of them incarnated in the month of Thai.  Among the Nayanmars, Thiruneelakanda Nayanar, Thayumanavaswamy, Apodi Adi, Kalikama Nayanar, Kannappa Nayanar, Chandikeswara Nayanar, Arivattaya Nayanar etc. were incarnated in the month of Thai. Pusha Nakshatra is the Nakshatra of Saturn in Cancer.  Cancer Moon is the ruling house.

House of Saturn

The month of Thai is the month of Capricorn.  It means the house of Saturn.  The month of Thai is the time when the sun can be there.  The first house of Sun’s northward journey is Capricorn. With the Sun in the month of Capricorn, the month of Thai, and the moon in the star of Saturn in the house of Capricorn in the opposite month of Cancer, Thaipusam is celebrated against this special background.  Thai Poosam is a festival dedicated to Lord Murugan in which Poosam star and Poornami Tithi come together. Poosam is the eighth Nakshatra. Numerologically 8 represents Saturn.  Saturn represents justice.

Pongal on Poosa Nakshatra day

All the auspicious things that were stopped in Margazhi will start in the month of Thai.  Even though Pongal festival is now celebrated on the first day of Thai month, once upon a time there was a custom of celebrating the new paddy harvested in Thai with Pongal on the day of Pusha Nakshatra. There are many references to this in the Tamil literature.  Pongal festival comes in Thail.  Friday is special in Thai.  In Saivism all Ambal temples and Tirumal temples and all mother shrines celebrate Thai Friday with great pomp.

Month of Saturn

Saturn is assigned two houses in astrology.  One is Capricorn.  Another is Aquarius, Makara means actions and deeds, hence the name Karmasthanam.  Since the same Shani will also give the result for that, the sin next to it is called Lapa sin.  What we sow in the tenth, we reap in the eleventh.  Shani is the one who says that good karma can be achieved by doing good karma.

Your actions determine your sins and virtues

Morning is  the right time when you start your activity.  Whatever action you start in that morning (10th bhava), the result will be given by Shani in the next bhava, Lapa Bhava (11th bhava).  Therefore, both the houses belong to him.  For that profit sin (11), 12th sin is karmic sin (10th sin), which means that you are going to spend (harvest) the results of your virtues (reflection to your action) in the tenth sin of Capricorn.  This month of Capricorn (Thai month) tells the wonderful truth that the way you spend that money, you will get profit in the next sin accordingly.

Duty to the child

According to mythology, Lord Shani was born as the son of Surya.  Sandhyadevi, the wife of Lord Surya, had lost her power due to the fact that she had borne the sun and his heat from close quarters for a long time.  So she decided to go to the world and do penance to regain power.  Afraid to tell Surya about it, Sandhya created a woman from her shadow who looked like her.  He named the girl Sayadevi as she emerged from the shadows.  Shani was born to Surya Devan – Saya Devi couple.  He usually has a crow as his vehicle.

His leg is slightly crippled, so he walks slowly.  So the name Mandan is given.  He stays in a sign for two and a half years.  A son’s most important duty is to his father.  As long as the father is alive, it is good karma to perform duties for him.  Dharma Shastras say that it is a great sin to ignore or insult the father without doing that, or to act in such a way as to hurt his heart.

It is also a Shastra that one should perform all duties during his presence (Father) and perform other Vedic rituals regularly for him(Father) after his death.  Since it is the duty of every child, they said to perform duties (Tharpanam)  like Thai Amavasai in the month of Saturn, the son of Sun.

Poosa Nakshatra

Similarly, Thai Poo Nakshatra is special.  Pusam, Saturn’s star, is in Cancer, the fourth house of the cycle.  This is called auspicious star.  Poosam Nakshatra is suitable for taking incharge, convening a council, doing special things like Seemandam, buying a cow, doing Vastu Shanti, doing special things like marriage, Grahakpravesam, pilgrimage and traveling abroad.

If the mind is pure

Pusha Nakshatra is in Cancer.  There are three Nakshatras in Kadakarasi namely Punarbhoosam, Poosam and Aiyalam.  In this, Thaipusam is celebrated when the Moon enters the Phusha Nakshatra.  Cancer is the ruling house of Moon.  Although there are many karakats attributed to the Moon, the most important karakam is the ruler of the mind.  That is why the moon is called “Mati” and the seventh sign of Cancer is Makara Rasi which belongs to the month of Thai. So what does it mean? The fourth sign is the mind, isn’t it happiness? Its opposite effect is Karma Rasi.

So the Pusha Nakshatra in the month of Tai shows that if you discipline your mind you can discipline your karma.  This is what Thirumool also conveyed by hinting not to chant mantras if the mind is pure.. It is because of the Lord’s grace that special ceremonies are celebrated in all the temples on the day of Pusa Nakshatra.

Why special for Murugan?

Another technique we can observe here is that Mars is exalted in Capricorn, which is the month of Thai.  Mars is the planetary sign of Lord Muruga.  If it is a female deity, it means Durga.  That is why they worship Ambaal on Friday in the month of Thai and Lord Muruga in Poosha and reach the unattainable goal.  As number eight signifies suffering, that suffering is removed by worshiping Lord Muruga.  When Saturn’s dominance is severe (Elarai Shani, Ashtamachani, Kandach Shani, Ardhashtama Shani) they get relief by worshiping Murugan who is exalted in Saturn’s Makara Rasi in the same Saturn star Poosanakshatra.

A Festival for all Gods

The Thaipusa festival has been celebrated in the Murugan and Shiva temples of Tamil Nadu since ancient times.  Thirumal temples also celebrate Thaipusa Mogotsavams.  Therefore, Thaipusad festival is the first important ceremony for the three gods.  Thaipusam festival is celebrated in Shiva temples and Murugan temples as well as the festival of three great deities. There are references in Devaram records about Thaipusam being celebrated about 1500 years ago, especially the apt song “Thaipusamadi ulgam boliveita” was sung by Tirunanasambandar.

In Thirumaylapur’s Kapaleecharam temple, is it right to miss the Thaipusa festival where the women dressed in costumes and ghee are made to celebrate the Lord sitting with his hands smeared with water?  Through the song

The day when Ananda danced darshan

Chidambara, which means temple in Saivism, has a connection with Thaipusad festival.  The day Lord Shiva danced with Umadevi in Chidambaram and gave darshan is called Thai Pusam.  Not only that, he came to Chidambaram and performed great works and visited Nataraja Iraniyavarman directly on this day.  It is for these reasons that pujas with special abhishekams are performed in Shiva temples on Thaipusam.

Thaipusam and Murugan

Lord Muruga is the first thing that comes to mind when we think of Thaipusa festival.  There are countless temples dedicated to Lord Muruga Thaipusam festival is celebrated with great pomp in every temple.  It can be said that there is no temple of Lord Muruga without celebrations on Thaipusam. Not only in our country but also abroad in temples of Lord Muruga, Thaipusam festival is celebrated very well.  Thaipusa festival is celebrated in hundreds of countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Penang, Central European countries, Western European countries, England, America, New Zealand, Australia etc.

Lord Murugan’s Aarupadai Veedu

However, the six palaces are said to be the most special places for Murugan.  Arupadai houses are Tiruparangunram,

First of all we need to know what is the philosophy of the six houses of Tiruchendur, Palani, Swamimalai Tiruthani, Palamuthircholai.  Aurupadai houses are first mentioned in Nakkir’s Thirumurukaartupapa literature.  It does not say “Aruppadai” but it says “Arupadai”.

With Lord Muruga as the lead singer, this book has 317 stanzas composed by Asiriyappa.  The word ‘pacification’ also means ‘guidance’.  Nachinarkinyar says that “Murukatupapa” means the channeling of one who is ripe for the acquisition of a house.  Religious philosophies are meant to console one’s life towards excellence.  River means way.  The Six Houses are the way to show one how to get higher and nobler in life. First of all we need to know what the Six Houses philosophy is.

The six-face Murugan

Let’s see how this number six is associated with Lord Muruga.  Lord Muruga has six faces. Arunagirinath wonderfully sings the philosophy of Arumuga.

Sataksara mantra

Lord Muruga’s Mantra “Satachara Mantra” is a mantra with six syllables called “Saravanabhava” in which each syllable represents a subtle philosophy.  Sa – means truth: ra – means removal of matter. V means eternal contentment: na – means nirvishyam;  P – means removal of sin;  V- is the nature of the soul, and it can be said in many other ways.

They say on the basis of Yoga Shastra.  Each letter has a house of one house and six houses of six houses, the fast of Murugan is the Shashti fast and it is the sixth tithi.  In Numerology, the number six represents Venus.  Lord Muruga is the lord of the East, where Venus represents wealth, who gives all the riches one needs in the body and in the world, who is ruled by Venus, who is the philosophy of the number six.

Worshiping Lord Muruga in poosha.

Arupada houses are also called Arupada houses.  We have already seen the theory that the month means actions and the effects of actions.  We have also seen that Poosa Nakshatra is a possible Nakshatra in Cancer, the mind-stimulating sign.  This reaction and effect goes on and on like a wheel.  Kati Moksha can only be attained by removing the cycle of this karma. The houses that cut the cycle of karma are also called Arupada houses because they are these power houses.  By worshiping Lord Muruga, who stands with a sharp wand of wisdom, on Thaipusam in all the houses, evils can be eradicated.

Thaiboosam in Palani

Tiruvavinankudi, Palani in Dindigul district is called Shaktikiri.  One of the Arupada houses of Murugan.  The event of Murugan slaying Darukasura on Thai Poosa is celebrated in Palani.  Palani auspicious Thandayuthapani Temple is a hill temple.  The source is Arulmiku Dandayuthapani.  One of the eighteen Siddhars, Bhogar Moolavar has installed the idol made of Navabhashana.  In this temple, a chariot race is held on the seventh day of the ten days of Thaipusam.  Bhavani will come in a chariot along the Rathaveedi in a marriage kolam with the goddess Murugan Valli.  On the 10th day, Tepporsavam will take place.

Murugan from Kavadi Sindh

Among the popular musical forms is Kavatishindu, a form sung by the common people, and on Thaipusam, devotees make a pilgrimage to Palani from many parts.  They take kavadi from Vratam to Murugan as a courtesy.  The songs sung by the Kavadi pickers along the way are called Kavadisindu.  In earlier times, people bringing milk for the worship of Lord Muruga used to go towards the temples with dance songs.  While going like that, the form of Ikkavadich Sindhu emerged from the types of songs that were sung for their performance.  Chennikulam Annamalai Redtyar was the first to introduce Kavadich Sindh.

Types of Kavadi

Countless devotees take kavadi to Lord Muruga on Thaipusam, which brings devotion to the eyes, ears and chest.

How many types of Kavadi?

Unit piercing – coming to the temple by piercing the tongue, chin, hand, other parts of the body with small and large shaft shaped needles.  Some people pull a cart like a small chariot attached to the backs of devotees with hooks.

Sugar Kavadi – Sugar is carried by devotees on foot.

Theerthak Kavadi – Cauvery Theertha is carried by devotees on foot from Kodumudi (Karur district).

Bird Kavadi – The unit puncher is brought in a vehicle hanging.

Pal(Milk) Kavadi – Palkudam is carried on foot by devotees as Kavadi.

Machakavadi fish is brought along with water by devotees on foot.

Peacock Kavadi – Kavadi decorated with peacock thong is carried by devotees on foot–besides Sarpa Kavadi. Not only in our country but also abroad, taking Kavadi and singing the songs of Murugan with the wonderful music of Nathswara melts the heart.  That is Thaipusam.

Thai Poosam in Thiruthani

Tiruthani is located in Tiruvallur district.  It is the fifth padai veedu out of six padai veedu.  Nakkeer’s Tirumurukaatrupadai and Arunagirinath’s Tirupugal sang here.  Muthuswamy Dikshitar has sung kirtan in praise of Lord Muruga in this Talat.  The Thaipusa festival is held here with much fanfare.  A special abhishekam will be performed for the deity before the ceremony.

Special pujas are performed by wearing gold armor, diamond Crown, green stone emerald garland.  Tens of thousands of devotees gather from the early morning to pay their respects by piercing their bodies and carrying kavadis.

Thaipusam is a mixture of dance and music

Thaipusam is also celebrated in Tiruchendur, the beach  where Lord Muruga performed Surasamharam.  Devotees wear garlands and make a pilgrimage to Senthur from March onwards for the Thai Pusa event to be held in the month of Thai.  A flood of people from thousands of villages in the nearby districts of Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram etc. marching towards Tiruchendur on foot and singing songs is an ecstatic scene that cannot be seen.  Holding the flag, wearing no sandals on their feet, decorating Lord Muruga in the available carts and singing songs, the feeling inside will create the vibrations of Taipusa festival in the minds of other people as well.

Thai Poosam in Sri Lanka

Thaipusam is celebrated in an elaborate manner at various Murugan places like Swamimalai, Tiruparangunram Palamuthircholai, Mayalam, Enkan, Etukkudi, Chikal, Marudamalai etc.  It is in Thaipusam that the people of Jaffna take pudir.  The ritual in which the farmers first cook and eat the paddy grown in their fields is known as pudir eduththal.Pudir  taking is practiced in some places on Thaipusa day.

After getting up early in the morning and cleaning the door of the house, the men in the house go to the field with sickle, coconut, camphor, knife and crab and stand facing east and worship the sun.  Keep it in the pooja room, take some grains of rice from it, remove the husk, mix the rice with cow’s milk and cut the banana into small pieces and eat it for pooja.  In Murugan temples, they take milk jugs and take Kavadi to perform their rituals.

Pathumalai Murugan Temple

13 km from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.  In the distance is Batu Malai Murugan Temple, a hill temple: made of limestone rocks.  Sungai Batu River flows along the mountain.  The Batu Temple Thai Poosa Festival is world famous.  Millions of pilgrims from Singapore and Australia flock to Mount Batu in Malaysia.  Devotees walk in a procession from Mariamman Temple in Kuala Lumpur to Batu Hill on Thaipusa Nannal.  Penang Thaipusam is celebrated with great pomp and ceremony at the Water Hill Temple near George Town in Penang State, Malaysia.  The Penang State Government has declared Thaipusat Thirunala as a public holiday.  It is solemnly celebrated at the Subramanian Temple at Gunong Sero near Ipoh in Malaysia.

Pusham to remove Brahmahati Dosha

Although Thai Poosam is celebrated in all Shiva Thalams, the one that immediately comes to our mind is Thiruvidaimarudur located near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district.  The Lord in this temple is Swayambulinga Murthy.  Sambandhar, Upper, Sundarar sung Devaram in this Shiva Thalam.

Four days of Kooththu

Once the evening was over and the night was beginning when Varaguna Pandyan, a Pandyan king, went hunting.  As the king was coming on his horse, the horse ran over a sleeping man.  He is dead.  The king who killed Anthana was afflicted with Brahmahati dosha.  Varaguna Pandyan, a devotee of Shiva, told Madurai to go to Tiruvidaimarudur to worship Soma Sundarar. How to go to Chola country, the enemy country?  What if the Lord does not show the way?  The Chola king invaded the Pandya kingdom.

Varaguna Pandyan defeated the Chola king in battle and chased him to Chola Nadu.  Then he went to Thiruvidaimarudur.  He entered through the east tower gate.  Brahmahati and Antana’s spirit followed the king.  But could not go inside the temple. So both of them decided to wait for the king’s return. But Lord Thiruvidaimarudur blessed Varaguna Pandyan by commanding him to leave through the western gate.  The king also returned to Pandiyanadu after Brahmahati got rid of him.

To commemorate this, even today, devotees who come to this temple follow the pattern of entering through the main eastern gate and exiting through the Amman sannadi tower gate in the west.  By worshiping Lord Thiruvidaimarudur in Thai poosha, bad sins will cease to exist.  Inscriptions indicate that during the Chola reign, there were four days of Kooththu at the Thiruvidai Marudur Mahaling Keswarar Temple along the Thaipusa.

Vallalar and Thaipusam

Vallalar is the next thing that comes to mind when we think of Thaipusam.  Vallalar “whenever he saw a withered crop he wilted”.  Arudperunjjothi Arudperunjjoti Thaniperunkarunai Arudperunj Jyoti” was sung by Vallalar. Thousands of Vallalar Mandras are functioning in India. Small Vallalar temples are functioning. In all the temples Thaipusad festival is celebrated very well and Annadanam is held.

Annadhana ceremony at Vadalur

Vallalar’s greatest philosophy

 1. Livelihood discipline.

 2. Individual human morality

 3. Love for living beings.

 4. The best charity to be done is that of mankind Alleviating hunger.

As long as one is hungry there is no way for spiritual thought to arise said by Buddha, similarly Vallalar who said that appetite is the root cause of all problems, started the Satya Gnanasabha almost 150 years ago on the day of Thaipusam in January.  The Thaipusa festival, a grand festival in which seven curtains are removed and Jyothi Darshan is celebrated in Vadalur, is a major festival.

Vallalar Ramalinga Swami was enlightened on a Friday in the month of Tai.  At Mettuk Kuppam near Vadalur, lakhs of people gather on Thaipusam to celebrate the Vallalar festival.  Vallalar Ramalinga Adikalar showed Thai Poosam Day as an external day of wisdom.

We can go on saying so many special things.  This year there is one more special thing about Thaipusam, the Lord Shani belonging to Makara Rasi, which is called Thai month, is ruling this year with strength.  Next year he will go to Aquarius.  Again you have to wait at least 27 years to visit Thaipusam during Saturn in Capricorn.  So special this year for Thai pooja.
