Nellai is a prosperous area with abundant water resources and is a paddy district strengthened by the flow of the Tamiraparani. Here is a shrine called Papakudi located in a cool environment with the gentle breeze of the Pothikai Hills.

In order to add pride to this town, the Sivakami Ambal Udanurai Thirukkadukai Moondreeswarar Temple is located on the north side of the town facing east.

On the way to the temple, the channel of the river takes a southerly direction.  In AD 1664 Thambiran Tholapillai and Chidambaranatha Pillai constructed a stone bridge to cross the canal.  After crossing this bridge, the majestic three-tiered Rajagopuram stands tall and the temple is surrounded by the towering Thirumadhi on all four sides.

After passing the main gate, one can see the palipeedam, the copper-clad flagpole, and the Nandi Devar pedestal.  After this, Muhamandapam, Maha Mandapam, Ardhamandapam and Karvarai were built as a part of Vijayanagara art work.

During the later Pandyan rule, the town was included in the interior division called Mulli Nadu.  In 1529 AD, when Pandyanadu was under the rule of the Vijayanagara Empire, three people from Kerala donated a village and a field called Kollangulam as Tirupani Dharma to the Nayanar Temple in Tirukkadukai Thirumanneesuram.  On the north side of the Muhammedapa is the Sivakami Ambal shrine.  Ambal is shown as Karunambika with her left arm hanging down and carrying a nilotbhava flower in her right hand.

In AD 1570, during the reign of Tirumala Raja, Sri Kariyam Ramappa Nayakkar appointed Karumayilan Kerala Aditya Devan to manage the temple administration budgets. At that time, this place was given as charity to the Antanars who had learned the four types of Vedas.  Therefore, at that time the place was called by the name of Adithavarma Chatur Vedimangalam. The Brahmin congregation looked after both the town administration and the temple administration. So the village name later came to be known as Parppanar Gudi.  At one point the name is changed as Papakudi today.

It is the experience of the devotees who come to this site that the devotees who have reached the appropriate age but are regretting not getting the right groom, give a Mangalya donation to this Sivagami Ambal and worship it with faith, and in 48 days, they will ge the ideal groom as per their mind.It is also said that it is said that the affection and mental unity between the couple will be strengthened if they buy and eat milk and fruit, which are hand-medicated offerings in the palliyarai puja.  Due to this, a large number of devotees participate emotionally in the palliyarai puja every day and enjoy eating and receiving prasad.

On the north side of the Maha Mandapa is the Thillaik Kootar shrine.  Brahmotsavam is celebrated for 11 days in the month of Masi.  At that time, on the seventh and eighth festivals of Nataraja, red coloured dress, white colour dress, and green colour dress decorations are held profusely.  On the 9th day, there will be a chariot procession in the morning and a Vaipavam where Swami will depart and the Thiruveedi will rise at night.  On the 10th day of Thirunal, Tirthawari will be held at Thamirabarani.

Anuknaya Vinayaka and Subramaniya are At the entrance of the Arthamandapa.  Thirukkadukai as the sanctum sanctorum has risen as the Moondreeswarar Lingeswara Murthy.  Charakondrai, Yellow Kondrai and Seng kondrai together are called  three kadukkai.Eesan in this thalam is the proud wearer of these three types of garlands. At the time of the construction of the temple, Moolavar is mentioned in the inscriptions as Nayanar of Tirukkadukai Mandram.Later he is also referred to as Nayanar of Thirumaneeswaram.

During the reign of the Pandyan Cholas, the Cholas army was stationed in the areas of Cheranmahadevi, Thiruvaleeswaram, Thuppakkudi and Manapadai Veedu. They did town and temple policing and also participated in temple repairs.  At one point, the Chola force stayed in Papa Gudi and give protection to the place.  Devotees say with confidence that by lighting a sesame oil  lamp every Monday, job opportunities will be available and family problems will be solved.

Puja is performed six times a day.The Moolavar Vimana is in the form of Nagar.  Dakshinamurthy, Perumal and Durga are blessed in Devakottam.  Swami, Ambal Thirukalyana Utsavam will be held in Aippasi Uthra Nakshatra.

In the inner circle there are shrines of Chokkanatha, Meenakshi, Twin Ganesha, Valli, Deivanai Sametha Subramanyar, Saneeswarar, Kalabairavar, Sun, Chandran, Navagraha, Jura Devar and Sandikeswarar.Outside the temple there is a Ganesha shrine at Kanni corner.  Whatever auspicious things are happening in Papakudi and surrounding towns, it has been a custom to start after worshiping Lord Ganesha first.

It is the belief of the people of the surrounding area that if those afflicted with the disease pray at the Juradevar shrine on Sunday during the Rahu period and offer pepper rice as a ritual, the effects of the disease will lessen and they will gradually recover. And also Devotees are confident that pujas to Durga and Bhairav will be performed and problems will be solved.
