Shivratri, the bright night.  We call it a night of pleasure and only if we have the grace of Lord Shiva, this Maha Shivratri Vratham will be possible.

Maha Shivratri holds special significance in Hinduism as Sanipradosh Vrat and Maha Shivratri are considered to occur at the same time.  Drayodasi during the day and Chaturdasi tithi at night.  Shivratri is very special.

It is also known as Gaurishankara Sammelana Sivaratri.  Such a special Shivratri is coming on 18th The date is to be observed on Saturday.

The word Shiva means bliss, pleasure, and Lord Shiva is the destroyer of evil thoughts like lust, anger, hatred, greed, and envy in the minds of those who worship Him.  He destroys diseases, mental worries, poverty in the lives of his worshippers.  Lord Shiva is the one who destroys all three sins committed in one’s birth.

We call Shivaratri, the night of light, the night of joy.  According to the Puranas, one can observe eight forms of Shiva worship to clear the karma of one’s life, the most special of which is considered to be the Maha Shivratri Vrat on Krishnapaksam Chaturthasi tithi in the month of Masi.

At a time when the whole world was in danger of drowning in the sea, Mother Parvati did penance and worshiped the Lord for the sake of the world’s lives.  That night is the day of Shivratri.  From Parvati Devi’s penance, Lord Shiva’s place on the left side is the day of Shivratri.  It was on Shivaratri that Umadevi received Agama Upadesha from Lord Shiva.

On this Shivaratri day, Arjuna, one of the Pandavas, performed penance and received the astra called ‘Basupadam’ from Lord Shiva.  For Markandeyan, Mahashivarathri is the day Lord Shiva performed samharam for Emadharman himself.  It was on the day of Shivratri that Bhagiratha brought the Ganges to the earth with a single leg.

It was on the day of Mahashivaratri that Kannappa Nayanar fixed his own eyes on the eye of Eason in the bleeding linga and achieved salvation.  Maha Shivratri is the day Lord Shiva blessed Brahma and Vishnu in the form of Linga.

Those who want to fast on Maha Shivratri should start on Friday.  One should start the fast by eating only one meal that day.

On the morning of Maha Shivratri, one should take a bath in cold water, apply thiruneer on the forehead, light a lamp in front of the image of the Lord in the pooja room and start fasting on Saturday and do not eat anything during the day and night.

Do not eat cooked food on Shivratri day and meditate on Shiva.  Drink only water.  Elderly and sick people can eat uncooked food like milk, fruits, etc.  If you observe a silent fast throughout the day of Maha Shivratri and chant the mantras ‘Panchatsaram’ or ‘Om Namasivaya’ in your mind, the pious benefits will be abundant.

This year Maha Shivratri is celebrated on Saturday 18th February 6th Masi from 6 pm on Saturday to 6 am on Sunday morning by participating in 4 abhisheka pujas held in Shiva temples and worshiping Lord Shiva.  Take bath next morning and complete the fast without sleeping all day on Sunday. If you sleep during the day on Sunday, you will not get the full benefit of Shivratri.

It is believed that if a person fasts continuously for 24 years on Shivratri, he attains Siva Kathi and his 21 generations attain salvation. It is also hoped one can receive Asvamedha Yagya Benefits.

Those who want to get wealth and success in life should fast on the 18th day of Maha Shivratri. It is believed that those who fast on Maha Shivratri will get good fortune and heavenly blessings.  Complete fasting cures incurable diseases.  All doshas are removed.
