Malavan Damodara Perumal is a place of worship with Thirumaal azhagi, Thamal in Kanchipuram district.

It seems that about a thousand years ago, this temple was worshiped by people belonging to the Madhva tradition and over time it was called Thanamallapuram as a gift to the Vaishnavas, and later it came to be known as Thamal.

Neighbors kept complaining to Yashoda about Kannan, a butter-stealing child.  Yasoda Devi could not bear Kannan’s mischief and once took a rope and tied him to Ural.  Kannan, bound by love, entered between the two trees with a shout and freed the two gods from the curse.  Everyone was surprised to see this, and Kannan’s stomach was scarred by the tied rope.  Then Kannan got the nickname Damodaran.  Damodaran (Dama Uthiran) means one who has a scar on his stomach tied with a rope.  Damodaran makes a rare appearance with a long scar below the navel at Thamal Thalam.

The Maharishis, who lost their minds in Kannan’s Leelas, prayed to Bhagavan to rise up in this temple with the same name and protect the people, and in order to fulfill their wish, he rose up with Thirumalazaki.
