Tiruvidaimarudur Mahalinga Swami Temple, belonging to Thiruvavaduthurai Atheenam, was built during the Cholas period.Inscriptions and documents in the temple indicate that the Cholas, the Pandya king Varaguna Pandyan, the Nayaks and the Marathas who ruled Tanjore have done many works to this temple. There are four Rajagopurams in the four directions.
In the four streets around this temple there are four Shiva temples namely Vishwanath, Aatmanathar, Rishipuriswarar and Sokkanathar; Mahalinga Swami Temple is also located in the middle of the temple, so it is also known as Panchalinga Thalam.
Karunya Amrita Theertha belonging to this temple is located on the right side near the East Rajagopuram and covers an area of about one acre.
If you go through the East Rajagopura gate, you can have darshan of Pattinathar on the left side and similarly at the West Rajagopura gate.
Padithura Ganesha, Kodimaram, Sudhaialana Big Nandeeswarar, to the right of which is the Gosala. After darshan of Nandi, turn left and there is Brahmahatti shrine. Here, every morning at 7, 8 and 9 am, the temple administration performs Brahmahatthi dosha removal pooja.
Dwarapalakas stand guard on both sides of the entrance to the second prakaram. Behind the Dwara Balagar on the right is a statue of Varaguna Pandian on a crescent.
Crossing this, the entrance to the first prakaram has the moon on the left and Surya and Umadevi on the right.

He also gave darshan in the form of a torch during the deluge.Lord Shiva appeared to Sage Markandeya as Ardhanareeswarar in this temple.
Ammunu Bhai was one of the wives of Maratha king Amar Singh son. She has presented a four-foot tall lamp to Mahalinga Swami as a wedding gift. It still shines in the Mahalingaswamy shrine.
In this temple Mahalinga Swami consecrated himself and preached the rules of puja to the Saptarishis and other sages. ‘Aarukalai Pujas (6 time poojas) are held here daily.
After darshan of Lord Shiva, turn left and there is a huge Lord Ganesha shrine at Utprakaram. He worships Lord Shiva daily according to Panchachara system. It is believed that moksha can be attained easily if prathaksan is done in the first prakara which is the inner prakara.
In the south there are four, 63 Nayanmars and Saptamadars. In the west are Eka Nayagar, Subramania Swamy Sahasra Lingam, Chola Lingam, Chera Lingam, Marudavanar and Anbirkiniyal shrine. has Here you can visit the stone Maruda tree and Mahalakshmi. In the north are Chandikeshwar, Durgai Amman and Ardhanareeswarar.

The second Prakaram is called Pranava Prakaram. It is believed that if you climb it, you will get the blessing of climbing Kailaya Parvatam. The Vembadi Murugan temple is located to the north of here. It is fitting that a shrine is located in Pranava Prakaram for Murugan who preached the Pranava Mantra! It is noteworthy that Arunagirinathar has sung four Tirupupugal songs on Murugan in this Thalam.The Vembadi Murugan Temple is an architectural style belonging to the Nayak period.In front of this, a mandapam has been built after consecrating the wisdom tree.
Even today, the practice of worshiping five Murugans namely Valli and Subramaniya Swami with Deivanai at the rear of the temple Utprakaram, Vembadi Murugan in the Pranava Prakaram, Murugan under the Marudu tree (thala maram), Murugan sitting as thuvarabalagar at the entrance of the Amman sanctum and Murugan near the western entrance is still in practice.

Coming out of the second prakaram, on the left is the famous Navagraha shrine. Opposite this is the way to Amman Koil. Amman Sannadi In the second prakaram there is a separate sanctum sanctorum for Lord Saturn to the left of the entrance. If you worship him, all the evils caused by Saturn will be removed. At the back is the shrine of Anbinikiniyal. Many women pray here to get rid of uterine tumors and give birth.
All around Amman Koil Utbirakara, famous goddesses in Tamil Nadu are realistically enshrining in paintings. The name of the temple deity is Perunalamamulaiyammai known as Pragat Sundara Kujambikai. In front of the goddess is a Nandi, a separate flag tree and an altar. The goddess shrine is in a separate temple complex.
Moogambika worshiped Lord Shiva in this temple and got rid of the sin of killing Moogasura. Later Mookambigai married the Lord of this temple.To commemorate this, Thirukalyanam is held every year on Vaikasi Uthiram Nakshatra.Moogambikai Temple is a separate temple in North Indian architectural style on the south side before Amman Sannadi.
Thiruvavaduthurai Nandi is the Parivar Nandi of this temple, so Mookambikai Amman in this temple performs the work of Nandi. It is customary for the worshipers of Lord Shiva to have darshan of the Parivar Nandi of this temple at Thiruvavaduthurai.
No one can escape the gaze of Moogambika Amman. The shrine was built in such a way that Goddess Mookambikai could be seen from the place where the devotees of Shiva and Goddess were. Looking at the entrance of Shiva and Amman, the eyes of Moogambikai Goddess should be enshrined in beauty.
The third largest prakaram is called Aswamedha prakaram. Aswamedha Prakara Valam is very famous like Tiruvannamalai Krivalam. It is believed that if you come and worship this Ashwamedha Prakaram, you will get the results of the Ashwamedha Yagam.
Tiruvidaimarudur is also considered to be the place of worship of Pattinathar and Bhadragiri, Thiruvisanallur Sridhara Ayyavall, Mahalinga Swami. There are 27 Nakshatra Lingams located in this temple.
Thaipusam, Mahashivarathri, Tamil New year celebration, Thirukalyanam in Vaikasi month, Adipuram, Karthikai Deepam, Karthikai Soma vara (week) pooja and Pradosha worship are very well celebrated.
